REACTIVE DOG TRAINING — STOP THE LUNGING, BARKING & PULLING ON LEASH

Reactivity is one of the most frustrating behavior problems for dog owners. It is also one of the most misunderstood. We address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

WHY THIS HAPPENS

Reactivity is an overreaction to a stimulus — other dogs, people, bikes, cars, or sounds. It is typically rooted in one of three things: fear (the dog is trying to create distance from something it perceives as a threat), frustration (the dog wants to get to something but cannot), or a combination of both. Understanding which type of reactivity your dog has is essential to choosing the right training approach.

WHY IT GETS WORSE

Reactivity escalates when owners avoid triggers rather than working through them. Every time the dog reacts and the trigger goes away — because the owner crossed the street, turned around, or pulled the dog away — the dog learns that reacting works. The behavior is reinforced, the threshold lowers, and the dog becomes reactive to more things at greater distances over time.

COMMON MISTAKES OWNERS MAKE

1

Avoiding all triggers — this maintains the problem and often makes it worse over time

2

Flooding the dog with the trigger hoping it will "get used to it" — this can cause a significant setback

3

Punishing the reaction without addressing the underlying emotional state

4

Using treats to distract the dog without building real threshold management

5

Assuming the dog is "dominant" or "aggressive" when it is actually fearful

6

Waiting for the dog to calm down before continuing the walk — this teaches the dog that reacting ends the walk

The Professional Solution

HOW WE FIX REACTIVE DOGS

We address reactivity by first identifying the root cause — fear, frustration, or drive — and then building a structured obedience foundation that gives the dog a job to do when it encounters triggers. We work at the dog's threshold, build confidence, and systematically reduce the reactivity through controlled exposure and clear communication.

OUR METHODOLOGY

Our reactive dog methodology starts with obedience. A dog that has a strong heel, place, and down command has something to focus on when it encounters a trigger. We build that foundation first, then introduce controlled exposure at the dog's threshold. We do not flood. We do not rush. We build real, lasting change.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can reactive dogs be fixed?

Many reactive dogs can be significantly improved with the right training. "Fixed" is a strong word — management and training work together. An evaluation will give you an honest assessment of what is achievable for your specific dog.

Is my reactive dog aggressive?

Not necessarily. Reactivity and aggression are different things. Reactive dogs are often fearful or frustrated — not aggressive. An evaluation will determine the root cause.

My dog is only reactive on leash. Why?

Leash reactivity is extremely common. The leash creates frustration (the dog cannot approach or flee) and the owner's tension travels down the leash. We address both the dog's behavior and the owner's handling.

Can you fix reactivity in a Board & Train?

Yes. Board & Train is often the most effective approach for reactive dogs because we can work with the dog in controlled environments and build the foundation before reintroducing triggers.

How long does it take to improve reactivity?

It depends on the severity, the root cause, and the owner's consistency. Most dogs show meaningful improvement within 4–8 weeks of structured training. Some cases take longer.
