Common Dog Behavior Problem

HOUSEBREAKING — ACCIDENTS IN THE HOUSE ARE A MANAGEMENT PROBLEM

Housebreaking is not complicated — but it requires consistency, supervision, and a clear routine. Most housebreaking failures are owner failures, not dog failures.

WHY THIS HAPPENS

Dogs do not have an innate understanding of where they should and should not eliminate. Housebreaking requires teaching the dog that outside is the appropriate place to go — through consistent supervision, a predictable schedule, and clear reinforcement of the correct behavior. Without these elements, accidents happen.

WHY IT GETS WORSE

Housebreaking problems escalate when owners give the dog too much freedom too soon, fail to supervise adequately, or clean up accidents with products that do not fully eliminate the odor. Dogs are attracted back to spots where they have previously eliminated. Without proper management and supervision, the dog continues to have accidents and the habit becomes ingrained.

COMMON MISTAKES OWNERS MAKE

1

Giving the dog too much freedom in the house before it is fully housebroken

2

Not supervising the dog closely enough to catch accidents before they happen

3

Punishing the dog after the fact — the dog cannot connect the punishment to the accident

4

Using cleaning products that do not fully eliminate the odor — the dog is attracted back to the same spot

5

Inconsistent schedule — dogs thrive on routine; irregular feeding and elimination schedules make housebreaking harder

6

Not using a crate as a management tool — the crate prevents accidents when supervision is not possible

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does housebreaking take?

Most puppies can be reliably housebroken within 4–8 weeks with consistent supervision and a clear routine. Older dogs with established habits may take longer.

My adult dog is still having accidents. What is wrong?

Adult dogs that are still having accidents may have a medical issue, an incomplete housebreaking foundation, or a marking behavior. An evaluation will determine the cause.

Should I use puppy pads?

Puppy pads teach the dog that eliminating inside is acceptable — which is the opposite of what you want. We recommend going directly to outdoor elimination from the start.

My dog only has accidents when I am not home. Is this separation anxiety?

Possibly. Accidents only when alone can be separation anxiety, incomplete housebreaking, or a medical issue. An evaluation will determine the cause.

Can you fix housebreaking in a Board & Train?

Yes. Housebreaking is a core component of our Puppy Development and Board & Train programs.
